Movie Under the Stars

Jeehdeez’a Elementary School in Pinon, Arizona, recently welcomed students, families, and community members to a “Movie Under the Stars: Star Wars in Navajo” recruitment and family engagement event. It was designed to celebrate Diné language, culture, wellness, education, and strong school‑community relationships.

This special event reflects the school’s commitment to preserving Diné Bizaad, supporting family partnerships, and ensuring families understand the academic programs, student supports, and culturally responsive opportunities available at Jeehdeez’a. Principal Dr. Vincent Lloyd Mays said the evening is “much more than an outdoor movie,” highlighting the school’s work to strengthen community relationships and promote healthy, positive engagement.

Families enjoyed a community ice cream social, interactive activities, local food vendors, school enrollment opportunities, a live DJ, and the feature presentation of Star Wars in Navajo, an internationally recognized achievement in Native language preservation.
